HELP

Indonesia, the hardest hit nation, said its toll - now at 80,000 - could reach 100,000, and officials began to acknowledge that the number of dead may never be known with precision, because the towering waves that smashed into Sumatra island swept entire villages with their inhabitants out to sea.

Quit your job and find happiness...

At 28, John Doyle was an overworked New York investment banker on the fast track. By most measures, he was a success. But he was also miserable. So during a semiannual review 2 1/2 years into the job, he simply quit. "Almost immediately I lost 35 pounds," says Doyle. For four months, he did little more than relax, rollerblade through Central Park, and read books. "Honestly, it was one of the happiest times in my life," he says.

No shoes, no makeup, no service...

Is there such a thing as make-up discrimination? A female bartender who refused to wear makeup at a Reno, Nevada, casino was not unfairly dismissed from her job, a U.S. federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday.

Is there no honor among thieves?

Entreprenurism gone horribly awry...

Professional beggars prowling about the streets of Moroccan cities with "rented" and drugged children to attract charity may have their days numbered. The government plans to crack down on the scam used by faux beggars in growing numbers for a kind of "emotional blackmail," a cabinet minister was quoted Tuesday as saying. Is the recruiter worth your time? Take this test to find out...

...I’ve decided it’s time to put together initial guidelines for a headhunter aptitude test. This is not meant to cover anything beyond the first five minutes of your experience with a headhunter. For those of you playing at home, start with ten points, and go through the following modifiers. These are all based on real situations thus far.

Take one point away if the headhunter makes a shuffling sound but says nothing for a few moments when you greet them with your name.
Take another point if the headhunter says “Oh, really? Oh, right, I have yours here, just a sec.”
Take one point away if the headhunter calls more than 15 minutes after a scheduled time, another if more than 30, another if more than 60, and two more if they don’t call until a later date or never call back.
Take a point if it is obvious that the headhunter is reading your resume for the first time while they talk to you.

Next time you have a phone interview, try this test out for giggle's sake.

Be careful before you pay to play...

There are some legit firms in the career business, but many are nothing but a racket. Check them out carefully before spending a dime. Companies hire outplacement firms to help laid-off employees find new jobs. Their services are usually simple, cookie-cutter methods that are also found for free in books at your local library. At best, a counselor will give you a daily nudge to "keep at it."

Career management is the consumer version of outplacement. That is, you pay for it yourself. Personal-marketing firms are yet another flavor of the same business, but they may assign you a coach rather than a counselor, and they leaven their product with lots of marketing lingo. (For example, "Your career is a product, and your résumé is a marketing brochure that sells your skills!")

Of course, there are some good career-counseling and coaching firms. You'll know them because they are proud of their reputations and will gladly provide references. READ: Investigate before paying for help in finding a job

This is the COOLEST stress reliever yet!!!!

From the company website...

Finally, the drudgery of corporate life has been captured in a play set for adults! Bob, Joe, Ted, and Ann spend eight hours a day, five days a week, at tiny desks in tiny cubicles in a giant room packed with countless similar cubicles in a giant building filled with countless similar rooms.

Each set has one 2-3/4" posable plastic figure and all the necessary plastic parts to build a classic corporate cube: four walls, desk, chair, file cabinet, in/out box, phone, and computer. Comes with a sticker sheet of decor for your cube, complete with graphs, charts, screens for the computer and pithy office posters. Also includes a job title sticker sheet so you can create a convoluted and meaningless position for your employee.

CHECK IT OUT!!! Visit: The Cubes

Because sometimes, even cupid needs backup...

Two friends are at a party when one sees a potential love interest across the room. Immediately, the other friend swoops into action, making an introduction and helping to keep the conversation going -- all so the buddy can score a phone number. It's long been a ploy in the flirting arsenal. But now, those who ride shotgun for the sake of love have a name: They are the "wingmen" and "wingwomen" of the dating world.

"Every guy's gotta play the role of the wingman at some point in his life. It's the unwritten guy code," says Steve Dybsky, a 25-year-old Chicagoan who works in advertising and has been a wingman for friends -- and had them do the same. It's become such a popular concept that people are even posting ads online, looking for wingpeople to accompany them on a night on the town.

Could this be a new career for you? READ: Wanted: Professional 'wingman' to help break the ice

Job Tip: JasmineSola is hiring for 12 stores...

What do women want?

Luciano Manganella, the owner of the trendy Boston women's boutique JasmineSola, has a pretty good idea. And now after 34 years in business, he's plotting a major expansion. The eight-unit chain has plans to open 12 stores in the next 18 months in New England. Manganella also is in talks with former Saks Fifth Avenue chairman and chief executive Philip Miller at Tri-Artisan Partners, a New York merchant bank, to explore a venture capital deal to allow JasmineSola to open another 50 stores nationwide in five years. Teenagers really don't know everything...

"Most high school graduates lack the qualifications necessary for college and work because their states don't require them to learn the skills employers and college officials say are important, according to a national report.

Because of poor English and math skills, these students often find themselves having to take review classes in college, decreasing their chances of earning a degree. Others end up stuck in low-paying jobs."

100 days of guaranteed work... A good idea?

Happening in India

"It is hard to think of a more far-reaching piece of legislation than that approved by the Cabinet on the right to employment. It can do a lot of good, but has the potential to do a lot of harm as well.

A law that mandates 100 days of employment for one member of every poor family in the rural areas (and there are 40 million such families) will cost the country Rs 40,000 crore (Rs 40 billion) annually -- or 1 per cent of what GDP would have become by the time the programme gathers momentum in three to five years.

The wage will be the legally prescribed minimum wage, with the states free to pay more if they so wish." READ: Guaranteeing jobs: A good idea?:

All aboard the jobs express...

While the employment outlook remains uncertain in the Lehigh Valley for 2005, one company that is hiring and will be hiring for several years to come is Norfolk Southern Corp.

The Norfolk, Va., railroad company is hiring 30 to 40 people at its Allentown operation, where it already employs 300 to 400 people. The company is looking to hire conductor trainees who could eventually become locomotive engineers.

Sometimes there are jobs in junk mail...

HELEN Sara is the queen of junk mail. She is responsible for distributing about 20,000 unsolicited pamphlets to homes each week. The mother-of-four has defended her business in the face of growing community opposition to junk mail.

A survey by The Daily Telegraph revealed that in the lead-up to Christmas there had been a big increase in junk mail, with some residents inundated with 67 pieces of material in just one week.

Outside Mrs Sara's home at Willoughby, piles of junk mail from businesses such as Coles, Kmart, and Power House are routinely stacked – eight bundles high – waiting to be distributed. While readers have expressed their outrage at being delivered junk mail despite putting up 'no junk mail' stickers, Mrs Sara said her employees were mindful of the signs.

"If they [the residents] have a problem with it they should put a sign on and they won't get any more deliveries from us," she said. READ: It's junk that delivers the jobs

How do I say, "Show me the money?"

Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay for it. Maxim 847. By Publius Syrus. (42 B.C.)

For many freelancers, setting rates is one of the most difficult things they do. Setting the right rates isn't a new dilemma; it's been a problem since the beginning of time. How do you estimate how long a job will take? How do you decide the rate to charge, and if it should be hourly, or by the project? These are problems that all professionals wrestle with on a daily basis.

Do you know who just googled you?

Internet searches have become common practice for hiring managers and recruiters, who say the effort sometimes yields useful information about candidates -- things employers wouldn't have learned from a resume and cover letter alone. "Smart hiring managers will always Google their prospective people," says Allison Hemming, president of the Hired Guns, a New York interim-staffing company. "If you've got a sixth sense about somebody and you're not really sure why you're feeling that way, Googling can really help you out in vetting a candidate."

At Chicago-based staffing firm Corporate Project Resources Inc., which places marketing professionals in jobs on an interim basis, "Google is something that we use a lot," says Sheri Karley, recruiting manager. Staffers there often perform an Internet search along with a background check and personality test when they screen candidates, Ms. Karley says.

But such searches can be a land mine for job-seekers. There's a bevy of information on the Internet, including things you may not realize are out there. Searches can turn up everything from personal Web sites and blogs to old company newsletters to articles you wrote for your college newspaper. "It's almost like a shadow résumé you haven't exactly made but it's following you around," says Pam Dixon, director of the World Privacy Forum, which studies workplace privacy issues. She says some of the worst problems for job-hunters arise when people fire off angry or vulgar e-mails that find their way onto the Internet. "Most Google damage is self-inflicted," Ms. Dixon says.

From the Job Stuff blog of Stephen Harris:

Phoenix Executive Group contacts job seekers appearing to be a recruiter. They call you in for an initial pre-screen interview, which is rare but is an acceptable recruitment practice. However, they do not clearly disclose that you, the candidate, pay the fee for placement.

"We don't need no education," Boys say.

Girls are taking the nation's colleges by storm. They're streaming to campuses in greater numbers, earning better grades and graduating more often. The same phenomenal success shows in high schools, where girls dominate honor rolls, hold more student government spots and rake in most of the academic awards. So says a just-released report from the U.S. Department of Education.

(How will this affect the future job market?)
