...I’ve decided it’s time to put together initial guidelines for a headhunter aptitude test. This is not meant to cover anything beyond the first five minutes of your experience with a headhunter. For those of you playing at home, start with ten points, and go through the following modifiers. These are all based on real situations thus far.Take one point away if the headhunter makes a shuffling sound but says nothing for a few moments when you greet them with your name.
Take another point if the headhunter says “Oh, really? Oh, right, I have yours here, just a sec.”
Take one point away if the headhunter calls more than 15 minutes after a scheduled time, another if more than 30, another if more than 60, and two more if they don’t call until a later date or never call back.
Take a point if it is obvious that the headhunter is reading your resume for the first time while they talk to you.
Next time you have a phone interview, try this test out for giggle's sake.

Be careful before you pay to play...
There are some legit firms in the career business, but many are nothing but a racket. Check them out carefully before spending a dime. Companies hire outplacement firms to help laid-off employees find new jobs. Their services are usually simple, cookie-cutter methods that are also found for free in books at your local library. At best, a counselor will give you a daily nudge to "keep at it."
Career management is the consumer version of outplacement. That is, you pay for it yourself. Personal-marketing firms are yet another flavor of the same business, but they may assign you a coach rather than a counselor, and they leaven their product with lots of marketing lingo. (For example, "Your career is a product, and your résumé is a marketing brochure that sells your skills!")
Of course, there are some good career-counseling and coaching firms. You'll know them because they are proud of their reputations and will gladly provide references. READ: Investigate before paying for help in finding a job

FAA says, "I need to hire 12,500 people."
The Federal Aviation Administration plans a hiring spree to replace the thousands of air traffic controllers expected to retire in the next eight years. While the employment outlook remains uncertain in the Lehigh Valley for 2005, one company that is hiring and will be hiring for several years to come is Norfolk Southern Corp.
The Norfolk, Va., railroad company is hiring 30 to 40 people at its Allentown operation, where it already employs 300 to 400 people. The company is looking to hire conductor trainees who could eventually become locomotive engineers.

HELEN Sara is the queen of junk mail. She is responsible for distributing about 20,000 unsolicited pamphlets to homes each week. The mother-of-four has defended her business in the face of growing community opposition to junk mail.
A survey by The Daily Telegraph revealed that in the lead-up to Christmas there had been a big increase in junk mail, with some residents inundated with 67 pieces of material in just one week.
Outside Mrs Sara's home at Willoughby, piles of junk mail from businesses such as Coles, Kmart, and Power House are routinely stacked – eight bundles high – waiting to be distributed. While readers have expressed their outrage at being delivered junk mail despite putting up 'no junk mail' stickers, Mrs Sara said her employees were mindful of the signs.

Do you know who just googled you?
Internet searches have become common practice for hiring managers and recruiters, who say the effort sometimes yields useful information about candidates -- things employers wouldn't have learned from a resume and cover letter alone. "Smart hiring managers will always Google their prospective people," says Allison Hemming, president of the Hired Guns, a New York interim-staffing company. "If you've got a sixth sense about somebody and you're not really sure why you're feeling that way, Googling can really help you out in vetting a candidate."
At Chicago-based staffing firm Corporate Project Resources Inc., which places marketing professionals in jobs on an interim basis, "Google is something that we use a lot," says Sheri Karley, recruiting manager. Staffers there often perform an Internet search along with a background check and personality test when they screen candidates, Ms. Karley says.
But such searches can be a land mine for job-seekers. There's a bevy of information on the Internet, including things you may not realize are out there. Searches can turn up everything from personal Web sites and blogs to old company newsletters to articles you wrote for your college newspaper. "It's almost like a shadow résumé you haven't exactly made but it's following you around," says Pam Dixon, director of the World Privacy Forum, which studies workplace privacy issues. She says some of the worst problems for job-hunters arise when people fire off angry or vulgar e-mails that find their way onto the Internet. "Most Google damage is self-inflicted," Ms. Dixon says.
